Tesla logged a record 207 Autopilot and FSD crashes in one month. Outlets agree on the number but split on what it proves, and the one figure that would settle it stays hidden.

Tesla told federal regulators it logged 207 crashes involving Autopilot or Full Self-Driving in a single month this year, the highest total the company has ever reported. That figure, pulled from Tesla's own filings to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is larger than every driver-assist crash Tesla reported in all of 2021 combined. Every outlet covering the story this week agrees on that number. Almost nothing else about it is agreed upon.

The disagreement isn't really about the crashes. It's about what a raw count can and can't prove, and about a second number that would resolve the argument instantly if Tesla would release it.

A Record That Comes With an Asterisk

Electrek's analysis, built by merging NHTSA's full Standing General Order crash export back to 2019, lays out the trend in stark terms: Tesla logged 826 driver-assist crashes in just the first six months of 2026, a 73% jump over the same period last year, off a base that was already the largest in the industry. Tesla now accounts for roughly 85% of every ADAS crash report filed by any automaker in the country.

Electrek is careful to note the obvious confound — more Teslas on the road, more FSD subscriptions, more miles logged under the system, all of which mechanically produce more crashes even if the technology is getting safer per mile driven. That caveat is real, and it's also where the story splits. Because nobody outside Tesla can check the other side of that fraction.

The Number Tesla Won't Show

Tesla's own Vehicle Safety Report makes the opposite case, in the opposite direction. The company claims one crash per roughly 6.36 million miles driven with Autopilot engaged, versus a national average of about one crash per 702,000 miles, and argues that puts Autopilot around nine times safer than the typical driver. Enthusiast and industry outlets covering the safety report have largely repeated that multiple at face value.

Both claims can be technically true and still mislead. Autopilot and FSD run overwhelmingly on highways, the safest road type per mile by a wide margin, while NHTSA's national baseline blends highways with city streets, rural roads and parking lots, where crash rates are far higher. Teslas also skew newer than the average 12-year-old car on U.S. roads, and newer cars crash less regardless of who or what is driving. Comparing Tesla's per-mile figure to the national average isn't quite comparing like to like, and Tesla has not published an independently auditable mile count that would let outside researchers build a fairer comparison.

That's the gap coverage of this story keeps stepping around. Electrek's reporting stresses that Tesla redacts the narrative on 99.9% of the 3,763 driver-assist crash reports in its file, versus close to zero redactions from GM, Ford, Honda and Toyota in the same dataset. Without those narratives, without a verified denominator, and without a way to separate Autopilot crashes from FSD crashes in the public file, "safer than humans" and "record crash count" are both defensible headlines built on a data set only one company can fully see.

The Regulatory Angle Most Coverage Skipped

While outlets were running the 207-crash number, NHTSA sent Tesla a 24-part information demand on July 2 as part of a formal Engineering Analysis into FSD crashes in low-visibility conditions, covering roughly 3.2 million vehicles and nine crashes, including one fatality. Buried in that demand is a request for an internal Tesla document titled "Radar Saves Us," which the agency says relates directly to Tesla's own understanding of what a camera-only system misses in fog, glare and dust. Tesla has until August 12 to respond, or face civil penalties that can run past $27,000 a day.

That detail didn't make most of the roundup coverage of the crash-record story, even though it points at the same underlying question from the regulator's side: what did Tesla know about the limits of its camera-only approach, and when. It connects to a separate, unresolved dispute over a fatal June crash in Katy, Texas, where Tesla's AI lead said the driver overrode FSD by flooring the accelerator before the car struck a house, while Musk separately called the FSD-crash link "makes no sense." The NTSB has confirmed the driver's input, but the fatal crash entered public conversation as an FSD story first and a driver-error story second, which is its own small case study in how framing outruns fact-finding.

Why the Framing Gap Matters

None of this means Tesla's driver-assist systems are secretly unsafe, and it doesn't mean the crash count is meaningless either. It means the public argument over Tesla's safety is being fought with half the data in view. Tesla holds the miles-driven denominator, the software-version breakdown, and 99.9% of the crash narratives that would let anyone outside the company check either claim. Readers are left choosing which incomplete number to trust: the alarming numerator or the reassuring ratio.

That same asymmetry — a company controlling the data that would validate or undercut its own safety claims — shows up whenever automation moves faster than the oversight built to check it, a pattern CheckDeezOut has tracked in the AI labor market as well. Until Tesla publishes an auditable mileage figure or NHTSA forces one into the open through the current Engineering Analysis, the 207-crash headline and the nine-times-safer headline will keep running side by side, both accurate, both incomplete.
